Sandra Chin
“I paint, I take photographs, I make things, I plant things. I watch things grow. I like walking barefoot in the summer but often have cold feet in the winter. I love stormy weather. I also like the smell of rain and smoky air on an autumn morning. I think early mornings are the best part of the day.
I don’t know if less is more, but I do think less is better.
By immersing myself in nature I am often inspired. I walk and explore the countryside and through drawing and painting I examine my understanding of our place in the world we live in. I often get lost and I continue to search”.
Sandra Chin is a contemporary artist based in Charlton, Wiltshire. Following a career change in 2016, Sandra took up an opportunity to start a Masters in Fine Art at Bath Spa University from where she graduated in 2018. Her work has been exhibited and sold in the UK since 2017.
Sandra’s paintings are a response to a dialogue; conversations between the landscape and humanity, time and the elements. She likes to explore the landscape and the vegetation that lies within its perimeter. Being outdoors, physically and mentally immersing herself in nature is very important. Traversing different terrains, seeing the landscape transformed by the elements and seasons inspire the start of new ideas. Dynamics and tensions between humanity & nature are often a recurring theme in her works. Her most recent works, which start off as grid-like little sketches, depict the landscape as an experience, and to get ideas down quickly they explore walks in local woods and along streams ‘Trees hold mysteries of time, yet time flows past like water in a stream’.
For Sandra, a painting begins with a photograph or drawing to hold a moment or thought or memory. Collected moments are translated into intuitive, gestural marks and expressive use of colour, led by the emotional response of gathered experiences.
