Timepeace
Miranda Carter
Miranda creates atmospheric paintings inspired by the feeling of being in expansive landscapes. Her work contains suggestions of watery valleys, misty horizons and hills veiled in soft, glowing light. She is particularly drawn to the twilight hours and the threshold where land meets sky.
Miranda’s practice is concerned with creating balance between mark, colour, texture and composition. Through trial and error, and repeated experimentation, she explores her materials, embracing the unexpected and noticing the way pressure, mood and process affects them.
She often uses many layers, creating changes in focus and exploring the interplay between quick expressive marks and slow considered ones. The paintings play with depth and texture, creating a dialogue between the physical surface and the landscape that appears from it.
She finds peace in wide landscapes with far-reaching horizons, and instinctively guides her materials to mimic the shapes and patterns found in the natural world. They calm her much like her painting practice does.
Ultimately, Miranda works to keep her paintings visually interesting, maintaining the viewer's attention. Inviting curiosity and drawing viewers into spaces that feel both familiar and otherworldly.
'Timepeace' refers to the work's intention to be a peaceful as well as acknowledging the importance of the 'time' spent painting to her process.
