Mosa (film curator) has worked with Aaron (visual designer) to develop a multimedia creative digital journal to document and share Mosa’s findings from an archive film research trip to Africa and Paris.
A by-product of this research trip is an untangling of her personal connection to African heritage film and how that relates to her work in the UK. Mosa is a person of South African and British heritage with a strong family legacy within the anti-apartheid movement, and therefore this learning in how we treat our collective histories and who has access to the footage, has both a political and personal effect.

Mosa Mpetha
Based in Leeds, and from Liverpool & South Africa, I am a film programmer of Black, African and Archive films in a freelance capacity and in a permanent role as Creative Engagement Officer at my local cinema, Hyde Park Picture House. At Hyde Park Picture House, amongst other things, I curate a new permanent strand of African films called ‘Cinema Africa!’ in collaboration with Leeds African Communities Trust.
Prior to working at the Picture House I co-founded Black Cinema Project, a space to watch and discuss Black films with Black people, which has recently toured a five-film programme ‘Women’s Stories from the Global South (& to Whom They belong)’ funded by the BFI to cinemas and festival nationally in conjunction with Cinema Rediscovered film festival.
I also work locally in Leeds for Scalarama Film Festival and created the Leeds Film Network and support individuals and groups in the community to programme their own screenings in DIY spaces. I am passionate about archive film and attend events such as ICO Archive Screening days, Il Cinema Ritrovato to watch, network and find out more.
